FBI Re-Investigating Supreme Court Nominee Kavanaugh Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) blasted Democrats Monday – accusing them of McCarthy-esque tactics in the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation process.
Democratic Sen. Chris Coons said after speaking with White House counsel Don McGahn over the weekend he remained “very concerned” the FBI’s probe would be too narrow.
To recap: Presumably for decades, and certainly as of 2013 and early July, Ford claimed that her alleged attack happened in the mid-1980s when she was in her late teens.
The FBI has already contacted four people on its list, the Times reported. After hearing from Ford and Kavanaugh last week, and meeting with sexual assault survivors, Collins encouraged calls for an FBI investigation before the Senate votes. President Trump’s position is comparatively strong, though he is less esteemed by his opponents, and his nominee’s case appears to be as strong as was that of Clarence Thomas.
Addressing concerns that those questions targeted “trivial” matters, or that because the allegations are decades old, Kavanaugh’s memory might not be accurate”, the former United States attorney and attorney general for Rhode Island said Tuesday, “I think if these things are trivial and it’s a minor, you know, miscue, if you will, if you’re looking at a perjury case you require that the lie be material, same with a false statement case, so tiny little slip-ups, I don’t think are the issue.
“Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting to put out the word that the “time” and “scope” of Federal Bureau of Investigation looking into Judge Kavanaugh and witnesses is not enough”, the president tweeted. No evidence has emerged that the White House has forbidden any investigative steps, and President Donald Trump has said he wants agents “to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion”.
When he spoke yesterday about what “we” intend to do, the GOP senator was talking about what he would have the Judiciary Committee do under his tutelage.
“It was quite a moment”, Flake said.
He said Mr Kavanaugh seemed willing to “mislead senators about everything from the momentous to the mundane” to ensure his ascension to the court.
“I couldn’t move forward without hitting the pause button”, Flake said on “60 Minutes”. And what Ludington says is that he frequently drank with Kavanaugh when they were at Yale, says Kavanaugh was a belligerent and aggressive drunk. It’s important for Democrats to talk about Kavanagh’s truthfulness about his drinking, his truthfulness in his testimony, that it’s something that should be looked into.
What Mr Trump was clear about, however, was that while Judge Kavanaugh may have had “difficulty as a young man” with alcohol, that alone shouldn’t disqualify him from the high court.
The background check was ordered last Friday, a day after dramatic testimony before the Senate judiciary committee from Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the California research psychologist who says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when they were teenagers in Maryland. “I want it to be comprehensive”. “And there were some things that I questioned or challenged and think need to be revised”. They say that the administration has put strict limits on what the FBI can investigate.
What she has said: “It is important to have a fair process for the sake of both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford, as well as the integrity of both the judicial branch and the Senate confirmation process”.
Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week that Kavanaugh had held her down on a bed, covered her mouth and tried to remove her clothes at a high-school party.
Donnelly, who had been a “maybe” on confirming the nominee facing allegations of sexual assault, on Friday stated that he won’t support Judge Kavanaugh.
The most senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dianne Feinstein, has sent a letter urging the White House to release the written directive sent by President Trump to the FBI launching the investigation. “And the reason I’d like it to go quickly – very simple, so simple – because it’s unfair to [Kavanaugh] at this point”. “It’s so unfair to his kids and his wife”. McConnell accused Democrats of moving the “goal posts” as it relates to the FBI investigation into the Supreme Court nominee.
