FBI Searching California Lake in Connection to San Bernardino Shooting

Divers have searched a California lake near the site of the San Bernardino massacre looking for evidence that may have been left by the husband and wife behind the attack.

FBI Assistant Director in charge David Bowdich said the search was prompted by a tip the FBI received, which alleged that Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, who carried out the attack, were seen at the park on the day of the attack, according to ABC News.

Farook, a coworker of those at the holiday party, and his wife stormed the IRC gathering December 2 with semi-automatic rifles, fatally shooting 14 and injuring at least 20 others.

Syed Farook and his childhood friend who supplied him with the guns used in last week’s shooting in San Bernardino had abandoned an earlier plan for an attack in 2012, according to Sen.

Risch told CNN on Wednesday that the pair got cold feet about the earlier plot after the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested four people in Riverside, California, for trying to reach Afghanistan to train with terrorists.

The FBI had no comment on reports it may be a hard drive that the shooters wanted to destroy.

The attack by Farook, the U.S.-born son of Pakistani immigrants, and Malik, a Pakistani native he married in Saudi Arabia past year, has heightened security concerns in the United States and become an issue in the USA presidential campaign.

Mr. Comey said that the F.B.I. believes that the couple was inspired by foreign extremist groups.

The organizations Malik sought out likely shied away out of extreme caution in communicating with individuals unknown to them and a fear of being caught up in a law-enforcement “sting” operation, sources said.

“My world is upside down”, she said.

Comey, along with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and John Mulligan, deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, briefed members of both houses of Congress on Thursday about the investigation in closed, classified sessions.

The source said it remains unclear whether Marquez had any involvement in the planning of the shooting or had any prior knowledge that an attack was pending.

San Bernardino City school officials said via Twitter that there is no danger to nearby Norton Elementary School or any other San Bernardino city schools. I couldn’t find out what was going on.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said it was his understanding that Malik was subjected to an in-person interview during the application process for a visa, but that he did not have additional details on it. He noted that while there were some indications that might have alerted law enforcement to Farook, he declined to detail what those might have been.

Marquez hasn’t been charged with a crime and has been cooperating with authorities.

Marquez, who checked himself into a mental hospital after the attack, told investigators that he and Farook were plotting an attack in 2012.
