FBI: Violent crime in United States rises again, murders up 8%
While the Trump administration has often linked violence and crime to immigration, Abt said, “every serious examination of immigrants and crime show that immigrants – “illegal” or not – commit less crime than citizens”. This is an increase of 2.4 percent. The number of murders committed rose almost 9 percent, while aggravated assaults and rapes were up about 5 percent over the previous year.
Nationally, the number of murders non-negligent manslaughter increased by 8.6 percent, while aggravated assaults and rapes increased by 5.1 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.
The statistics also say that there were fewer murder and rape incidents reported in 2016 than there were in 2015.
Auto theft is another issue. That’s nearly seven times the percentage change on a national level. Chicago, for example, singled out by the White House for its surge in shootings, saw a 60 percent jump in killings from 2015, accounting for more than 20 percent of the nation’s increase in murders, according to an analysis of the Federal Bureau of Investigation data by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University.
In California, violent crime went up from 2015 to 2016 in major cities, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Jose, contributing to an overall increase of 4.1 percent.
The FBI reports that violent crime increased by 32 percent from 2015 to 2016 in Horry County.
Violent crimes across the U.S.
A total of 8,787 burglaries and 13,938 larcenies occurred in the Motor City.
The FBI report showed 356 violent crimes took place in Lima during 2016, up from 347 the previous year. However, half of Chicago’s rise in murders were confined to five neighborhoods with 9 percent of the city’s population.
The U.S. Department of Justice is set to release a separate crime report that Gelb hopes will help provide a clearer snapshot of crimes in the country.
When the change from one system to the other happens, it can initially appear that the area has a higher level of crime. “Quite frankly, what I think happened is there were just too many decisions being made in the criminal justice system and that has created a real ideal storm for our state and for the 2nd judicial district”.
“Crime is not just a function of policing and prisons”, Pfaff continued.
“Sadly, Trump will probably seize on these numbers to do more fearmongering”, said Thomas Abt, a Harvard Kennedy School researcher who worked on violence prevention in the Obama justice department. That marks the highest the crime rate has been since 2012.
The FBI data do not include justifiable homicides or unintentional killings that result from recklessness or criminal negligence, such as killing someone while driving drunk. Berry estimates the department needs 1,000 officers and several candidates seeking his position put that number closer to 1,200.
