FDA approves controversial ‘female Viagra’ drug

Women and their doctors will have to decide whether the drug’s modest benefits warrant taking a psychiatric pill on a daily basis. The drug is meant to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), a “persistent absence of sexual thoughts, fantasies, responsiveness and willingness to engage in sexual activity”.

The drug, that faced FDA disapproval twice earlier, is also being perceived as a symbol of gender equality in the country.

The United States of America’s (USA) drug controlling authority has given a green signal to world’s first female sex booster drug.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug being called the female viagra on Tuesday, but West Palm Beach doctor Stanley Althof has been studying Flibanserin for more than a decade.

So, how does the drug work?

Many people are saying it doesn’t, or, at least, that it doesn’t work well enough.

The new drug, Addyi (Flibanserin), targets the central nervous system.

Created by Sprout Pharmaceuticals under the brand name Addyi, the drug received FDA approval with certain limitations.

Opponents of the drug say it is not worth the side effects, which also include nausea, drowsiness and dizziness. The drug is for women who do not have an underlying physical or psychological cause for the disorder, the agency said in a news release. Then it was rejected a second time.

Parrish said she is eager to get back on a drug that “truly did restore my interest in sex”. I think it’s a disaster. But drugs that act on blood flow, hormones and other biological functions all proved ineffective.

The worrisome side effects that Flibanserin can cause are low blood pressure and loss of consciousness, the latter of which, for a drug for sexual treatment, does sound sort of horrifying.

Addyi is taken once a day in the form of a pink pill and regulators said it was only safe for women have not reached menopause.

A representative from Sprout Pharmaceuticals says it will be available October 17th.

Having more options for ways to increase desire is a positive thing.
