FDNY: 1 dead, 3 others injured in apparent blast
One person is dead and three people suffered minor injuries after a building, located at 4206 13 Ave., in Borough Park, Brooklyn caught on fire Saturday afternoon.
More than 100 firefighters have been deployed to the explosion site.
Mayor Bill de Blasio is scheduled to hold a press briefing at the scene around 5:15 p.m.
Nigro said the second-floor tenant had bought a high-end stove and was moving out of the apartment, a procedure that involved disconnecting the gas line.
“I see a man who was hopping on one leg. And I think he got injured because something fell down”, another said.
The new tenant died in the blast as plume of smoke descended on the street.
“Had it been the next day it would have been a much worse situation”, he said.
At least one person is dead and several others injured-including a child-after a possible gas explosion caused the collapse of a building in Brooklyn on Saturday, NY1 reports.
The city Department of Buildings says staffers are also on the way to assess the damage. A spokesperson added that “it appears to be a gas explosion”.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for a state investigation into the incident, calling the recent trend of explosions “disturbing”.
The blast apparently ripped the facade off the three-story building in the Borough Park neighborhood, leaving its upper two floors gaping open.
“The only common thread is natural gas and the dangers of natural gas”, said James Leonard, the chief of department for the Fire Department of New York.
