Federal Bureau of Investigation director says no credible U.S. terror threats
He confirmed that investigators are aware of threats circulated online by individuals claiming to be part of the Islamic State, including a video that praises the attacks in Paris while featuring previously used footage of a person preparing to detonate a suicide bomb in Times Square, but noted much of the media is only propaganda and not a substantiated threat.
However Attorney General Loretta Lynch says they will still investigate threats made.
Comey said the government had perceived no credible threats of an attack against the US similar to the ones in Paris, but said the bureau was keeping close watch on individuals who could be inspired by them.
Comey said after the Paris attack the U.S. had taken several preventive measures.
The radicals have been under watch for months, but there are now fears that they might try to imitate last week’s attack in Paris, which killed 129, Comey said. He said the agency was following dozens of people deemed high risks for carrying out “copycat” attacks.
“This bill that has been posed by Mr. McCaul – and I like Mr. McCaul – is a bad bill because it seeks to micromanage the process in a way that is counter productive to national security to our humanitarian obligation and the overall ability to focus on Homeland Security”, Johnson said.
“We have stopped a lot of those people this year, especially leading up to July 4th, and there are others we worry about and we cover all across the country using all of our lawful tools”. “We will keep watching them, and if we see something, we’ll work to disrupt it. That’s what we’re doing about it”, he said.
“Do not let fear become disabling”.
“Instead, we hope that you will turn fear into healthy awareness of what’s around you”.
“They are also the reason that we are a target, and they are what terrorists want most to see us abandon”, she added.
“And at that moment, the needle (in the haystack) we’ve been searching the entire nation to find, and have found, goes invisible to us”.
