Federal Bureau of Investigation divers search lake for evidence in San Bernardino massacre
Tashfeen Malik, left, and Syed Farook. But investigators do want to find out more about who this married couple interacted with, how they hatched and carried out this horrific plot, and why. Two of the men were later found guilty, and two pleaded guilty.
The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the San Bernardino couple that fatally shot 14 people and wounded many more were radicalized online, before they were married.
Mr Marquez, whose wife is sister-in-law to Farook’s brother and either sold or gave Farook the two assault rifles used in the attack, has told the authorities that in 2012, he and Farook had plans for an attack at that time.
Funerals continue for a few of the 14 victims who lost their lives during the massacre in the Inland Empire of Southern California as FBI investigators return to seek for clues in a San Bernardino lake now into last week’s fatal shooting.
David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, wouldn’t comment on what they were looking for. But he did say that Farook and Malik were in the area “at some point” – without specifying if this was before or after the massacre.
Divers were looking for electronic devices, a hard drive and other items linked to the shooters.
“Emotional and physical scars that were suffered by them will take years to overcome and some of them will never get over their emotional scars”, Bowdich said.
The two men discussed some type of attack around 2012 but dropped the idea after four men were arrested in Riverside, Calif., in a separate plan to kill Americans in Afghanistan, according to a senior official.
New details emerged Thursday about Enrique Marquez, the man who purchased two of the assault rifles used by the San Bernardino shooters, including that the 24-year-old Riverside man spoke to KTLA in April on an unrelated story.
Authorities have said that the break-up of that plot likely spooked Farook and his friend Enrique Marquez, who were planning an attack of their own.
CNN, citing unnamed officials, reported Farook had been a member of Kabir’s social circle.
One source said the government now has little, if any, evidence that Malik or her husband, Syed Farook, 28, had any direct contact with Islamic State, which has captured control of large parts of Syria and Iraq. The fifth wasn’t arrested and hasn’t been identified. The official said investigators are not searching for any particular piece of evidence.
Employees for the environmental health services department, where the victims of the attack worked, will resume work December 14, county officials said.
“And that work continues”, Mr Comey added.
Marquez claims he knew nothing about the San Bernardino shootings. He was also their friend, neighbor and in-law. Investigators are looking into whether this was a sham marriage for immigration purposes.
In her native Spanish she said that it’s been a very hard week, with unspeakable pressure and stress. They say if it is in the lake, it may still be possible to retrieve some of the data. An official briefed on the investigation told ABC News that the team is searching the area as a precaution and to ensure that no evidence was missed.
The husband-and-wife duo “were radicalized for quite a long time before their attack”, he added.
