Federal Bureau of Investigation Finds No Credible Threat to Colorado Military Families
The advisory, which was issued to military facilities and law enforcement agencies in Colorado and Wyoming, says that “Middle Eastern males” have been approaching soldiers’ wives at their homes in both states, casing them for possible attack.
“On numerous occasions, family members of military personnel were confronted by Middle Eastern males in front of their homes”. The males have attempted to obtain personal information about the military members’ family members through intimidation.
Following the second shooting, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement encouraging military personnel across the state to “take appropriate steps to defend themselves as necessary”, USA Today reported.
“This news comes less than two weeks after FBI Director James Comey, speaking in Denver, warned of the heightened threat from the Islamic State that Colorado specifically faces”.
The alert was reissued in July when reports of similar incidents surfaced in Cheyenne.
“We are not aware of any specific threats to Fort Carson Soldiers, Family members or civilians”.
One reported being approached in May in front of her house by two Middle Eastern men, who stated that she was the “wife of a U.S. interrogator”. The FBI asks the community to remain vigilant and report signs of suspicious activity to law enforcement.
“To date, the men have not been identified and it is not known if all the incidents involve the same Middle-Eastern males”.
The FBI has declined to confirm the authenticity of the alert. It is being shared for informational purposes but has not been fully evaluated, integrated with other information, interpreted or analyzed.
An Federal Bureau of Investigation media coordinator in Denver did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Cheyenne Police Department spokesman officer Dan Long said he recalled seeing an FBI bulletin of that nature but didn’t know whether it was the same one.
“I am alarmed by reports out of Denver that military members’ families have been harassed outside their homes and may be under surveillance”, Gardner said in a statement.
