Federal Bureau of Investigation searches lake for evidence tied to San Bernardino mass shooters

Investigators are still trying to piece together profiles of the Farook and Malik, who killed 14 people at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino last week and died the same day in a gun battle with police.

According to descriptions of those who know him, Mr. Marquez seemed an unremarkable figure drifting through life, somehow right into the fringes of radical Islam.

He declined to discuss what specifically led investigators to conclude that the couple had radicalized independently as early as 2013, but suggested the information did not come from intercepts. Police returned fire and shot and killed the two men, who shared a Phoenix apartment.

While Marquez has been forthcoming about his ties to Farook, federal officials are still working to verify the information he has provided, the source said.

FBI investigators who are probing the San Bernardino shooting are taking a new look at Kabir, the two officials said.
