Federal contractor can unlock just about any iPhone

“This is certain to elevate the debate between technology firms and law enforcement about data privacy and access”, Ben Johnson, co-founder and chief technology officer of Obsidian Security Inc.

And, to be precise, Forbes put the word “probably” in the headline, too, neatly wrapped in brackets in a way that probably made the Forbes lawyers much happier. As detailed in a November 2017 warrant, the Department of Homeland Security was able to unlock an iPhone X it seized during a weapons trafficking investigation.

Cellebrite says it can unlock handsets like the iPhone X running on any version of iOS 5 or above, including the latest.

As well as these, Cellebrite claims it can also compromise “Google Android devices, including Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note devices; and other popular devices from Alcatel, Google Nexus, HTC, Huawei, LG, Motorola, ZTE and more”.

And if they haven’t discovered how to do it. well, they could always pay Cellebrite to do it for them.

At the time, Apple insisted that cracking the encryption that protected the device would open a Pandora’s box of sorts, allowing law enforcement to crack any iPhone and effectively rendering the company’s security measures useless. Cellebrite has contracts with multiple federal agencies like the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI.
