Federal leaders return to campaign trail as Duffy trial looms large
Stephen Harper says the social gathering would meet the brand new dedication over 4 years by concentrating on refugees from spiritual minority teams within the area who face persecution or the specter of extremist violence.
“The global rise of global jihadist movement is something we are reminded of in some part or other in the world nearly every day”, Harper said.
Harper, keen to show off his bona fides as the experienced incumbent, promised to make it a crime for Canadians to travel to specific countries or regions where they could fight alongside groups officially identified by the federal government as terrorist organizations. The Conservatives say that their government would create a new category of banned foreign travel zones, or “declared areas”.
Harper’s announcement features a multi-million-dollar pledge to fund teams which are making an attempt to guard locations of worship and non secular artifacts focused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Political posturing, Trudeau scoffed during a morning event in Montreal, calling the idea a distraction meant to draw attention away from the Conservatives’ dismal economic record. “That is not a human right in this country“.
But Harper accused the Liberal leader of ducking the issue because of the party’s recent opposition to the ongoing mission by the Canadian military to battle ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria.
The prime minister said his latest refugee target would give priority to religious minorities threatened with persecution of extremist violence.
“Canada has long served as a refuge for the persecuted”, Harper said. That’s in addition to already resettling about 20,000 refugees from Iraq and about 2,500 from Syria.
Offering safe haven to refugees is not enough, the prime minister said during a campaign stop in Markham, Ont.
“It’s just beyond horrific”, Harper said.
Harper said, however, that the scale of the humanitarian crisis was such that it can not come close to being solved by refugee policy alone.
But when talk turned to Canada’s aggressive military approach, Harper’s language grew sharp as he described how ISIL was engaged in “mass slaughter at an alarming, lightning pace” when the Conservative government got involved.
