Federal prisons put pork back on the menu after only two weeks
The only item that remained on the menu prior to last week’s ban was pork roast. Ross didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, but he told the Post that the presence of Muslim prisoners was not a motivating factor for the temporary disappearance of pork from prison menus.
A decision by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to no longer serve pork to inmates has been quickly reversed after public outcry and a letter of inquiry from Senate Republican Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley.
Another reason for the ban, according to prison officials, was the growing cost of pork.
Could the Prison Bureau’s decision be a risky precedent for other agencies, such as the Pentagon? They have since announced they will continue serving pork roast. Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote in a letter Thursday to Bureau of Prisons Director Samuels, Jr.
After the bureau drew complaints from the American pork industry and most recently from Iowa Sen.
“The pork industry is responsible for 547,800 jobs, which creates $22.3 billion in personal incomes and contributes $39 billion to the gross domestic product”, he wrote.
The Bureau of Prisons reversed its decision hours after Grassley sent the letter.
The pork industry was also dubious about the findings of a survey that came to the conclusion prisoners didn’t want pork.
The pork industry complained about the ban, but the chicken and beef industries were happy. Additionally, the spokesman indicated that pork had been the lowest rated food, ‘for several years.’ Please supply the surveys and responses dating back as far as prisoners may have indicated their dislike for pork products.
“It may possibly start a food strike or a riot, especially in a maximum security prison”, he told The News.
Grassley said he is suspicious of claims that inmates simply do not want pork products.
Seth Ferranti, who did more than two decades for drug charges, was more optimistic about the change. “That’s good news for the American economy. So why should prisoners not be able to enjoy it?”
