Federal probe sought in police shooting of man in wheelchair
Phyllis McDole, 48, allegedly assaulted the woman, who police say was the not the 911 caller, on Friday night, shortly after officials released an excerpt of the 911 recording.
Authorities said Phyllis McDole turned herself in Monday, but details of her arrest were not immediately available Tuesday.
Court records show a Delaware man who reportedly shot himself and refused commands to drop his weapon before being killed by police while in his wheelchair had previously expressed suicidal thoughts and had a history of being combative with police.
McDole has stated that her son wasn’t armed during the incident, and others say there is no visible gun in video footage.
According to court documents, as McDole punched the resident, she said, “B–, you got my son killed”.
Police said the assault victim had two black eyes, a cut lip and scratches after McDole and five other people went to her home and beat her. McDole, who was in a wheelchair at the time, was paralyzed from the waist down after a shooting about 10 years ago.
Meanwhile, New Castle County Councilman Jea P. Street has called for an independent federal investigation of the shooting by the U.S. Attorney General’s Office and the FBI. Authorities say they found a gun near his body.
Delaware officials are investigating the fatal shooting of Jeremy McDole, which was caught on video by a bystander’s cell phone.
