Federer Beats Cilic To Win 20th Grand Slam Title
Roger Federer has beaten Marin Cilic to win the Australian Open, his 20th Grand Slam title.
He has an aura about him and it is incredibly tough for the youngsters to take him on at the business end of the Grand Slam as South Korean sensation Hyeon Chung found out in the semifinals.
In the women’s final, 2nd seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark beat top seeded Romanian star Simona Halep in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday.
“The fairytale continues for us, for me”.
While winning tournaments is Federer’s priority, he could soon return to the World No.1 spot which he last occupied in October 2012.
Of course, he didn’t miss out on congratulating his opponent Cilic, and thanking his wife Mirka, his support team, Cilic’s support team, the event sponsors, the volunteers who worked at the event, and Australians in general.
But if you look at certain other sports where the rules are constantly being tweeked and changed, it’s hard to compare, because the game is different as well as the number of games played per year. “Not because I was not feel good or anything, I just felt like maybe Berdych is really feeling it”.
“I managed to turn it around in that fourth set and that lifted me, I was hitting the ball great and playing phenomenal”, he said. I’m just waiting for the new question: “‘When are you going to win the second one?'”. You just marvel at his tenacity and his floating ability on the court. “It wouldn’t mean the same without you guys”.
Roger Federer has credited his wife Mirka with keeping him motivated and still going strong at 36, although his longevity has “many pieces to the puzzle”.
Roger Federer is on the verge of becoming the World No.1 after the ATP rankings were updated following his Australian Open triumph.
He said: “I’m still a little bit confused that it’s all over and that I was able to do it”. “It was a big battle, five sets”.
But 29-year-old Cilic drew level at 3-3 and five games in a row handed him the fourth set to ensure a dramatic conclusion. It’s possible I’ll play something.
Speaking about Sunday’s final against Cilic, Federer revealed how he was overcome by nerves after winning the first set. I had to get lucky at the beginning of the fifth set.
