Federer facing 772nd-ranked qualifier
Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska plays against USA player Madison Keys during their women’s quarter-final match on day eight of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Tennis Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, on July 7, 2015.
Ivanovic was a 2007 semifinalist at Wimbledon but has not made it past the fourth round since then, including second-round exits in 2013 and a year ago.
Roger Federer has ended British qualifier Marcus Willis’ feel-good Wimbledon run.
Since winning last year’s title, Williams has come up short in the majors, losing in the semifinals at the U.S. Open and finals of the Australian and French Opens.
The second-seeded Spaniard beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 on Centre Court. After a five-set tussle, it was the man from Monasterevin who came out on top (2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5). In the space of two weeks he has qualified and won a round of Wimbledon and now he’s playing Roger Federer on the centre court.
With the Brexit decision stealing Wimbledon’s normal British late June headline domination, a match between a powerful European force and a British underdog this week at the All-England Club seems like a metaphor.
Despite dropping the first set of his semi-final with fellow Irish player Joshua Pim without winning a game, Hamilton won in four sets (0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2) with a reporter at the match describing his performance as “sensational”.
Serena Williams and Andy Murray both face potentially easy opening matches against lowly ranked opponents on Day 2 at Wimbledon.
Willis is the lowest-ranked qualifier to make the second round of a major since Jared Palmer at number 923 at the 1988 US Open.
In the second set, Vekic had a break chance for 5-3, but another unforced error squandered it.
But the Czech broke serve at 4-5 and took the breaker by 11 points to nine, luring Kyrgios to the net with one of many silky dropshots before passing him with a crosscourt forehand.
“The first set had some hairy moments, down some set points, but that’s where experience kicked in. lots of it”, Williams said.
Lisicki, the German who lost to Marion Bartoli in the 2013 final, took exactly one hour to beat the 62nd-ranked American.
However, under the competition’s rules, even this win did not make him Wimbledon champion. It’s the first all-British men’s meeting at Wimbledon since 2001 and first at a Grand Slam since 2006.
The 20-year-old, who is based in Bradenton, Florida, lost in the first round to 29th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation 6-0, 7-5. She played on, making it to the main draw and then surprisingly beating a seeded player, Sorana Cirstea.
When the players met at the net after Williams’ return victor ended the match, they embraced like old friends.
By the time the 1890 Wimbledon championships came around, Hamilton was ready to show the world he meant business.

Novak Djokovic won his 30th consecutive Grand Slam match, the third-longest streak in the history of men’s tennis, to move into Wimbledon’s third round.
Under cloudy skies, play began on schedule on the outside courts at the All England Club.
Earlier, former No. 1 Leyton Hewitt said he believes Kyrgios and Tomic have the big-match temperament and grass court know-how to challenge for the Wimbledon title.
Up first on Centre Court will be third-seeded women’s player Agnieszka Radwanska against Kateryna Kozlova.
That led some to surmise that Williams has been beset by nerves as she seeks No. 22, which would equal Steffi Graf’s Open-era record (Margaret Court holds the all-time mark of 24).
Monday’s Centre Court schedule also features French Open women’s champion Garbine Muguruza against Italy’s Camila Giorgi, and seven-time men’s victor Roger Federer against Guido Pella of Argentina.
