Federer, Murray, Williams sisters return to quarterfinals
Andy Murray has moved into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a surprisingly straightforward win over Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4.
Commentating for the BBC, McEnroe poured scorn on Kyrgios – before Kyrgios did exactly the same thing after a 7-5 6-1 6-4 defeat to world No 2 Andy Murray.
“Some of the tennis I’ve played at the end of the matches, in particular the last two matches, the third sets of both of those matches have been very good”.
“As soon as I lost the first set, I just lost belief”.
“Tsonga is a really, really good grass court player, very, very risky”, he said. “If he plays well (and) I’m not on my game, I can lose that match for sure”. Obviously it felt like a mountain to climb after losing the first.
McEnroe urged the coachless Kyrgios to appoint a fulltime mentor to help the firebrand fulfil his “God-given talents” before his career slipped away, saying “this would be an important time for his parents to look him in the eye” and ask what the 21-year-old wanted out of tennis. “I think a lot of people in the locker room now believe they can win it”. “I’ve been playing well so far in this event but the matches as you progress get tougher”.
Kyrgios said he saw no difference between that and sitting in the locker-room, and is not one to deviate from his own path.
Kyrgios later revealed he played computer games on the morning of the match.
“I just try and stay in the moment as best I can and hopefully I can keep doing that for the rest of the tournament, because it’s served me well over the years”.
The Australian, who described his performance after the first set as “pretty pathetic”, has now – in common with a multitude of Britons – hitched his wagon to the Murray camp.
“These things happen. It’s OK to get blown off the court”, Federer said. One week I’ll just not do anything.
Murray has an excellent record against 12th seed Tsonga having beaten him 12 times from 14 meetings. “I see him at times more than I see my family”.
“When nothing’s really going on in the match, like in the middle of the second set against Nick, it’s much harder to concentrate than at 6-5, 0-30”.
“He’s got to look in the mirror if he wants to become a top player and win slams now”.
“I know everyone goes, “Oh, that’s boring”.
The other two matches on Wednesday are being played on Court 1, with Djokovic’s conqueror Sam Querrey up first against Milos Raonic before Tomas Berdych takes on Lucas Poille later.
“Everything is good for me”, said the former world number five. “He’s only human. At the same time he’s a great player”, Kyrgios told reporters.
Her sister Venus faces Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro on Court 1, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – doubtless shattered from his epic 19-17 fifth set victory over John Isner – returns to action against fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
