Federer out of Shanghai Masters
Federer said it was a tough day at the office for the 34-year-old.
The third-seeded Williams wore a bandage on her left thigh and looked hampered in her movements. The two fought for an exhausting four hours, 33 minutes at the newly built Qi Zhong Stadium before Nalbandian finally won 6-7 (4/7) 6-7 (11/13) 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7/3).
The Shanghai Masters resumes on Wednesday on Sky Sports 3 HD at 6.30am with Murray involved in the second match of the morning – so you can expect him to be on your screens at roughly 8.30am. He said he was thrilled to have won against Federer.
However, Roger would come out fighting in the second set and his power and precision was too much for the Spaniard, whose serve was broken twice. He would not “do a Mayer”, either: Ramos-Vinolas served out his first ever top-10 win, 6-3. I don’t underestimate or lack respect for anybody out there. These guys are all touring professionals, they know what they re doing. I didn’t feel comfortable during the match. But he did a good job.
He arrived in Shanghai without a competitive match in nearly a month-but then that is what he had done a year ago when, after an opening-match scare, he did not drop another set, even against Djokovic, to win the title. As if on cue, 27-year-old qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who until two weeks ago was battling it out on slow clay at the Catalan Championships, threw his arms up in triumph, eyes bright, fists clenched. After the second set I thought I would lose. (The tournament) was close to my house.
Ramos-Vinolas will next face either France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Victor Estrella Burgos in the third round.
“I just spoke with my girlfriend, my father, my mother, my fitness coach, my other coach who is travelling when Jose is not coming”. The Swiss Maestro, who lost the match 6-7, 6-2, 3-6 had been the defending champion at the tournament, and has now moved down to #3.
His fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil is also through after downing Simone Bolelli 6-3,6-4.
CRI’s Sophie Williams reports on the latest from Shanghai. It was their fourth ATP double title.
