Federer seals 47th Grand Slam quarters
Roger Federer produced a stunning performance to down world No. 16 David Goffin 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the Australian Open fourth round on Sunday and set up a quarter-final with sixth-seed Tomas Berdych.
Over the course of his celebrated career, Roger Federer has acquired wisdom on the tennis courts that translates to life lessons which he hopes his children can learn from.
Federer again broke on his fourth break point to crack the second set wide open, and he served out for a two-love lead in 50 minutes. Young Myla and Charlene have joined their mother, Mirka, in Federer’s box at matches, their heads buried in books, as their famous dad has expertly navigated his way into the second week of his 36th consecutive Grand Slam – one of his many records.
Family life then became the theme for the remainder of Federer’s post-match presser, with the four-time Australian Open champion discussing life on the road with reporters.
“We’re used to this life”.
“It was good [and I was] surprised it went as fast as it did”, said Federer.
Both players have been looking excellent under the hot sun in Melbourne, Federer beating David Goffin in straight sets in the last round, while Berdych downed Roberto Bautista Agut in a marathon match to make the Quarter Finals. Djokovic faces Kei Nishikori in another quarterfinal Tuesday.
With his twin daughters Myla Rose and Charlene Riva now six, Federer has spoken in the past about how he is hopeful he can provide them of enjoyable memories of him as a player.
He said it hurts sometimes landing on the hard courts as he chases balls other players would leave, adding “Maybe something snaps in my mind, and I just go for it… So I think they see the benefit of hanging around with the same theme or subject for a while”.
Federer and Goffin both have played in the 2016 Brisbane International before coming to play Australian Open this year.
Federer, who reached 300 Grand Slam wins when he beat Grigor Dimitrov on Friday, will be favourite to create yet another slice of history after winning all three of his previous matches against the 16th-ranked Goffin.
“It’s always tough to play on a court that you’ve never played [on], like Rod Laver Arena”, said Goffin.
ROGER Federer is constantly trying to teach his children about life, but this time it was kids dishing out the tips. “In terms of a level that I’ve played, it’s the match to forget for me”, said Djokovic. “I think this sort of flatter bounce and faster court is good for his serves, good for his returns”. I’m just going to try to do the same thing.
The two giants of men’s professional tennis may come across each other in one of the semifinals in the Melbourne tournament.
