Feds are probing another possible Tesla Autopilot crash
No charges were filed at the time of the accident, but that does not mean that charges won’t be filed following the investigation.
Pennsylvania State Police say the driver told them he had activated the autopilot feature just before the crash. However, some experts believe such partially autonomous systems lull drivers into a false sense of security.
Tesla added that the self-drive technology “requires you to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times”, and serves as an “assist feature” to reduce driver workload. The police report said that the driver of the tractor-trailer failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming traffic.
“Fortune’s article is fundamentally incorrect”, Tesla said. His account jibed with the accident report by the Florida Highway Patrol, which said the auto was traveling at 65 miles per hour when it hit the tractor-trailer.
While it’s unclear what role, if any, Autopilot played in the Pennsylvania crash, it comes at a bad time for Tesla.
The Model X reportedly hit a guardrail then swerved across a number of lanes. It finally landed on its roof in the middle of the roadway.
Tesla vehicles have the ability to send data to the company about their condition and operation.
“The dual camera system is capable of recognising and reacting to stop signs with no driver input”, the source said, indicating Autopilot 2.0 will be another significant step towards full autonomy. The Pennsylvania State Police declined to release additional details because an investigation is in progress. A 2013 Infiniti G37 driven in the westbound lane by Thomas Hess of West Chester, Pa., was struck by debris from the Scaglione vehicle, but neither he nor his passenger was hurt. The investigation is focusing on a Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model S sedan that crashed into a truck, resulting in the death of Joshua Brown.
Neither the laptop nor a DVD player also found in the vehicle was running after the crash, said Sergeant Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol. The advocated of the autonomous driving claim that most of the vehicle accidents are caused by human error and that the driverless cars will likely accidents.
Baressi, reached by phone, declined to comment. Google’s self-driving cars have, for example, been involved in numerous prangs and crashes.
The SEC filing stated that Tesla could “become subject to product liability claims, which could harm our financial condition and liquidity if we are not able to successfully defend or insure against such claims”.
Tesla’s autopilot is still considered to be in the testing phase.
In the Wednesday blog post, Tesla wrote that the damage sustained by Brown’s Model S made it hard for the company to recover data from the care remotely.
Tesla immediately contacts a driver after an incident to confirm they are safe and offer support, the spokeswoman said.
