Feds end prosecution of Barry Bonds without conviction Republican American Mlb
Instead, the DOJ said the reversal of Bonds’ conviction would stand.
Since his retirement, Bonds has all but completely faded out of the public eye.
A jury ruled in 2011 that Bonds obstructed justice when he gave a grand jury a long and evasive answer in 2003 when asked if personal trainer Greg Anderson ever injected him with steroids. A federal appeals court overturned that conviction in April….
“One of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals judges in favor of vacating the ruling noted that, “[The obstruction statute] stretched to its limits … poses a significant hazard for everyone involved in our system of justice, because so much of what the adversary process calls for could be construed as obstruction”. “I am relieved, humbled and thankful for what this means for me and my family moving forward”.
Bonds’ legal victory is unlikely to win over critics who concluded he cheated by using performance-enhancing drugs, or help him with Hall of Fame voters. The U.S. Solicitor General, who ordinarily makes final decisions on whether to appeal cases to the high court, elected against pressing the Bonds appeal, according to the court document.
During Bonds’ trial, other ballplayers, including baseball stars such as former Oakland A’s and New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, were hauled into court to recount their relationship with BALCO as prosecutors tried to prove that Bonds misled the grand jury about steroid use and his ties to BALCO and Anderson.
The Department of Justice ended their decade-long investigation of Bonds for obstruction of justice.
He will no longer be linked to felony charges and the clearing of his criminal record could potentially pave the way for him to gain election into baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Bonds was charged four years after he testified before a grand jury after receiving a grant of immunity.
As a result of the conviction, the Major League Baseball all-time home run leader served 30 days home confinement and paid a $4,000 fine.
Bonds hit 762 home runs and maintained a stellar 1.051 OPS across parts of 22 seasons in the Majors. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your heartfelt wishes to me; for that, I am grateful.
