Feds investigate faulty air bags in some older Honda Accords
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is concerned about the reports claiming that the SRS module of the 2008 mannequin model of Honda Accord fails to communicate with the management PC of the auto model.
If this investigation of the NHTSA finds this defect in the SRS module of the airbag controller of 2008 Accords calls for a recall then Honda will most probably have to recall around 384000 units of their 2008 Accord sedans from all over the United States.
Honda said it is cooperating with the investigation and will continue an internal review.
One of the reports involved a frontal crash event where the frontal airbags did not deploy.
The victim died of neck and head injuries when the driver’s air bag in her 2001 Honda Civic released metal shrapnel because it inflated with too much force, Fox News reports.
The vehicles will be recalled if NHTSA determines one is warranted. The agency has received at least 19 complaints alleging failure of the supplemental restraint system (SRS) module.
A person filed a complaint saying, ‘My son was driving my vehicle and did not make a turn and ran into a concrete block wall at about 50 miles per hours. Several people complained that the computer had to be replaced to fix the problem.
There was an injury of unknown severity in the incident that occurred five months ago, the complaint said. “The air bags did not deploy”. Another complaint from an owner in Illinois said, “I had to pay out of pocket close to $500 for parts and labor (which) seems silly as this is a safety-related service”.
ODI is opening this investigation to further evaluate the scope, frequency, and effect of the alleged SRS module failures.
