Feds tell Texas resettlement agencies that state can not block Syrians
The HHS letter makes pointed reference to the Refugee Act of 1980 to provide “assistance and services” to refugees “without regard to race, religion, nationality, sex or political opinion”, and can not cease ORR-funded services to Syrian refugees.
The letter – signed by the director of the federal resettlement office Robert Carey – came after more than two dozen governors vowed to block efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in their states following the terrorist attacks in Paris.
“Today’s briefing was a chance for governors to hear directly from those responsible for the processing of refugees and the security of our nation”.
The president then stated: “What makes America America is that we offer that chance”.
For now, both debates remain in limbo; the Senate will deal with the House’s bill after legislators return from the current recess, and the president’s executive action is stuck in the courts.
We’re continuing to send refugees to all these states.
A Bloomberg poll from last week suggested that more than half, or 53 percent of Americans, share the same concerns and would oppose taking in more Syrian refugees. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, meanwhile, said he’s told local pastors they could count on him to help shelter Syrian refugees who arrive through “any organized, thoroughly vetted program that the country asks Dallas to participate in”. Every time we get a new population of refugees coming into the United States, we change it a little so that it’s better for that population.
“Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Today, we give thanks for all of our loved ones and the fearless men and women in uniform who serve our country”, Obama tweeted.
The Obama administration sees such screening as impractical and impossible. Wyoming does not have a refugee resettlement program. The party tends to be skeptical of policies that would bring new people into the fold, arguing that some broke the law crossing the nation’s borders, and others could threaten national security. And because of the particular conditions regarding the Syrian crisis, there are additional security screens in place for Syrian refugees.
He emphasizes that Syrian refugees attempting to enter the United States must “undergo a security screening process that is more thorough than any other for people entering this country” and includes tests and interviews conducted by five different governmental departments.
Comparing the plight of Syrian refugees to the pilgrims who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621, President Obama made a holiday plea Thursday for Americans to accept the migrants with open arms.
