Feds test bomb remnants of New York blast that injured 29
The FBI, ATF and the state police are assisting local police in the investigation. Four blocks away on 27th Street, a pressure-cooker device was found with a piece of paper with writing on it close by, officials said.
Officials solicited tips from the public, telling reporters at a news conference in the New York Police Department’s headquarters that they didn’t know who set off the bomb or why. A forensic examination of the device and its components will be conducted at the FBI Laboratory at Quantico, Virginia.
Officials haven’t revealed any details about the makeup of the pressure-cooker device, except to say it had wires and a cellphone attached to it. A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in NY said investigators were examining its remnants to determine its composition. Beck said there were no known credible threats to security in Los Angeles, but those attending Sunday’s Emmys in downtown Los Angeles were asked to report any suspicious activity.
On Sunday, Clinton stayed largely silent for much of the day as facts were rolling in, but she criticized Trump late Saturday night for declaring the explosion a “bomb” at a Colorado rally before officials had confirmed the cause of the blast.
However, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton made a connection, saying in a statement that “I strongly condemn the apparent terrorist attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey, and NY”. A US official familiar with information circulating inside the government said the motive remained unknown and insufficient evidence had been gathered to link the two NY bombs. Investigators found similarities between the explosives used in both states, according to multiple law enforcement officials, but authorities said they have not concluded the incidents are linked.
Earlier in the day, another official said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was aware of the posting and evaluating its authenticity. He said there was no known link to global terrorism.
“I want New Yorkers to be confident when they go back to work on Monday that NY is up and running and we’re doing everything that we need to do”, he said.
Authorities didn’t identify the attacker, but Ahmed Adan, speaking to the Minneapolis Star Tribune through an interpreter, said his son Dahir A. Adan, 22, was the attacker and that police had come to the Somali family’s home to seize evidence. After Saturday’s attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey and New York, Hillary Clinton released the following statement: “I strongly condemn the apparent terrorist attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York”. New Yorkers who endured the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the devastating Hurricane Sandy in 2012 said they were generally unperturbed.
The New Jersey explosion came from a pipe bomb, officials said.
In a statement Sunday, the Democratic presidential candidate said law enforcement officials in NY and New Jersey need support as they investigate. “ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack in Minnesota, and this should steel our resolve to protect our country and defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups”.
A spokesman says the United Nations is assessing security in the wake of an explosion in New York’s Chelsea district as the organization prepares to host world leaders arriving for the General Assembly. “We do not know that yet”.
There was little ambiguity about responsibility in a stabbing Saturday night at a shopping mall.
The bomb in Manhattan appeared to have been placed near a large dumpster in front of a building undergoing construction, another law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, told the AP. Trace elements found at the scene are consistent with a pressure cooker.
NYPD and FBI Bomb technicians rendered the device safe.
Federal investigators in Quantico, Virginia, are examining evidence from Saturday’s explosions in New Jersey and NY. Law enforcement officials are working to identify who was behind the attacks in NY and New Jersey and we should give them the support they need to finish the job and bring those responsible to justice – we will not rest until that happens. Eyewitness News has learned that the explosives used in the Chelsea bomb was a mixture of ammonium and nitrate called “Tannerite”. Tannerite is often used in target practice meant to ignite when shot at by a gun.
“We’re going to be very careful and patient to get to the full truth here”, New York’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, said Sunday.
Caldwell reported from Washington. “We don’t know yet”, de Blasio said.
An explosion on a residential street in the Chelsea neighborhood injured 29 people. All of the injured have been released from the hospital. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo toured the site Sunday.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo added that 1,000 additional New York State Police officers and National Guard troops will be deployed to patrol bus terminals, airports and subway stations.
Cuomo spoke Sunday morning near the site of the Saturday night blast on West 23rd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood. He noted that the device in Manhattan appeared to be different than a pipe bomb explosion earlier Saturday in New Jersey and said he didn’t believe the two were connected.
Authorities found a second device in Manhattan a few blocks away from the one that exploded and removed it. Authorities said dozens suffered minor injuries.
