Feingold Stretches Lead Over Johnson In New Survey
The Marquette Law School Poll finds Feingold with a 50-36 lead over Johnson, who has been targeted by Democrats as a vulnerable seat in 2016.
Feingold, a Democrat, has a 14-point lead over Johnson, a Republican, in the latest Marquette University Law School poll.
Pollster Charles Franklin said the numbers have been going up and down, in part because only 55 percent of responding to the poll are able to say if they have a favorable or unfavorable view of both candidates. Until voters become more informed, Franklin said that’s a recipe for continued volatility in polls of the race. Feingold, meanwhile, is an unknown to 26-percent of voters, despite being in the U-S Senate for 18 years before losing to Johnson in 2010 – and staying politically-active since then.
Last month, the race tightened slightly, with Feingold still in the lead carrying 47 percent to Johnson’s 42 percent. In the previous three months, Johnson brought in about $2 million and had $2.7 million cash on hand.
The poll of 803 registered voters was conducted from September 24-28 and has a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
Feingold asked Johnson to sign a pledge created to keep outside money out of the race this year and he refused.
In the first six weeks of the campaign, about 40 percent of Feingold’s money came from Wisconsin donors.
“The wild swings in these early polls show just how meaningless they are”, Reisinger told the Wisconsin State Journal.
