Feinstein Introducing Bill To Ban Bump Stocks After Vegas shooting
How did Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock, who shot and killed 59 people from his 32nd story hotel window, amass an arsenal of firearms?
A mass shooting in Las Vegas has become the deadliest in U.S. history, and some say the state’s gun laws are to blame, with New York’s Police Commissioner Brill Bratton calling them “a reflection of insanity”.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on Monday asked Ryan to create a select committee on gun violence to recommend legislation.
Investigators discovered 23 guns in his hotel room in Las Vegas in the immediate hours after the attack, plus another 24 at his homes in Mesquite and Verdi, Nevada, near Reno.
“You really don’t have to be a professional armorer to do it”, said James Gagliano, a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation supervisory special agent and CNN law enforcement analyst.
“The first response from some politicians has been to call for more gun control”, officials said.
But, Feinstein said, “for one reason or another”, her daughter and neighbors decided not to make the trip from San Francisco. “The purchase of that many firearms in and of itself don’t necessarily raise red flags for us”.
Some Democrats were also still trying to learn more about the device.
He bought a lot of them recently. But Art Netherton, who runs a gun shop here in Las Vegas, says concerns about these devices are ridiculous.
“Politicizing this awful tragedy is, I think, beyond disgusting”, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday afternoon.
At least 59 people were killed and 527 others wounded after Paddock opened fire Sunday on an open-air concert in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada. Far from taking weapons away from law-abiding gun owners, these steps would keep the most lethal variety away from the wrong people.
“(Paddock) didn’t set off any alarms.
“Look, that should be outlawed”, the governor said.
Manufacturers tout the stocks, some of which sell for less than $200, as offering a simple and affordable alternative to automatic weapons without the hassle of a rigorous background check and other restrictions. Fully 57 percent said they backed stricter laws in the first poll; just 47 percent said so a few months later, a rate of a little less than one point per *week* in declining enthusiasm in the interim.
Bump stocks “may be an area where we need to look to be sure the law is not being subverted”, said Senator Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican.
“The American people are exhausted of being outraged, of sending thoughts and prayers, of seeing men, women and children die because the gun lobby does put profit over people”. Vasquez called it “a very comprehensive background check”. “Multiple” means two or more guns to the same purchaser within five business days. Parker said they’re easy to get online.
Some states, such as California, regulate how often guns can be purchased. Thus in California and NY, which have strong regulations that require applicants to show a need and submit to a background check, would allow out-of-state folks to be exempt from these sane requirements and they could freely have a concealed weapon. And it probably won’t prevent numerous gun-involved crimes in our nation’s largest cities.
Legislation needs to provide for those with these rapid-fire guns and accessories to be turned over to authorities, during a time-certain period, with stiff prison sentences for those who defy the new rules and later have them in their possession. The state also has no laws regulating assault weapons.
