Ferrari recalls 814 cars in US to fix Takata air bag problem
This particular defect, which affects certain 2015 model-year Ferrari models, “is related to the relevant combination of insufficient gluing of the leather on the driver’s side airbag cover and the possible rotated installation of the driver’s airbag cushion in the airbag module”, Ferrari told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a recall document.
“In the event of a crash, the deployment of the driver’s air bag in a rotated orientation increases the risk of injury”, the recall documents warn.
The recall to mind insures California That, F12 Berlinetta, FF, 458 Italia, 458 Spider, 458 Speciale A. 458 Speciale, and Southern californiaFerrari motor vehicle versions. All the affected cars were manufactured between December 19, 2014, and April 29, 2015. In its defense, Ferrari said that the cases of incorrectly deployed airbags due to the defect are “extremely limited”, but they are still ordering dealers to stop the sales of the affected cars until the fault is rectified.
Ferrari has issued a recall order for 2,600 vehicles, including units of the LaFerrari, due to problems with Takata airbags. The vehicles are sold for between $200,000 and $1.4m each (£123,000-£895,000). While it’s a different situation, Ferrari says Takata is the company that supplied the airbags involved in this recall. The recall is expected to begin soon on July 30.
Ferrari’s problem with assembling the airbags comes amid a roiling scandal over defective airbags made by Japanese firm Takata, which have been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries around the world.
