Fiat Chrysler recalling 1.9 million vehicles for air bag defect
Fiat Chrysler’s US unit FCA US recalled 1.9 million cars Thursday for a problem that could prevent the airbags from deploying, a defect tied to at least three deaths. It includes models sold between 2010 and 2014. If they fail to work as designed, the air bags might not deploy, and the selt belt pretensioners, which tighten the seat belts in event of a crash, might not work, Fiat Chrysler says.
“If all these factors are present, there may be an increased potential for occupant injury”, FCA said. “Fiat Chrysler says it is recalling the following vehicles; 2010 Sebring mid-size auto, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200’s, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber’s, the Dodge Avenger’s from 2010-2014, and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs”, CNBC’s Phil LeBeau reported on Thursday afternoon’s “Closing Bell”.
FCA said 1.4 million of the cars that being recalled are located in the U.S. The company said another 142,959 of the vehicles are located in Canada, 81,901 are in Mexico and 284,051 are outside of North America.
The problem affects vehicles equipped with specific occupant restraint control modules and front impact sensors.
Actual recall repairs aren’t ready to proceed.
