Fiers: No foreign substances during no-hitter
When he was traded to the Astros, I thought it was good to get a player with a track record early in his career of success. But before his anticipated senior season, driving during the night on his way back from Christmas break, Fiers fell asleep at the wheel, hit a guard rail on a Florida turnpike and flew through his car’s windshield.
“I had no idea during the game”, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
September 25, 1986: Mike Scott over the San Francisco Giants at the Astrodome (to clinch the National League West title).
“That’s how their team plays”, Greinke said of Houston’s home run power. Fiers is known for giving up more walks than average which is why it should not surprise anyone that he issued three free passes over nine innings. But today he hit all three balls really hard.
“I kind of looked around for a quick second, everyone’s just going insane and I’m just trying to get it done that much more”.
Major League Baseball Network’s Heidi Watney announced during Friday night’s edition of Quick Pitch that Fiers is the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter after changing teams mid-season since Jim Bibby did so for the Texas Rangers in 1973. “But other than that, you know you’ve got to score and give yourself chances. I tried to expand a little bit, just hoping to get the strike zone”. I go and study them.
It was the Dodgers’ first hit in 13 1-3 innings since Kike Hernardez’s two-out double in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game at Oakland.
“Obviously, he’s a guy that we have had a lot of respect for over the years”, Mattingly said. “Finding ways to manufacture runs”.
Correa flubbed it. It was initially ruled an error, but after Dodgers public relations manager Jon Chapper requested it be reviewed, it was changed to a hit, and the Dodgers had two. First baseman Luis Valbuena struck with two outs in the second, blasting a 3-2 pitch 411 feet to the back of the home bullpen in right-center field. Starter Brett Anderson gave up all three runs on seven hits including a pair of homers over six frames but his performance was over shadowed by his offense which was no hit and mustered just three free passes.
Red Sox 7, Royals 2 – Johnny Cueto had his worst start since going to Kansas City as Boston beat the AL Central leader at Fenway Park. Justin Turner cut the Houston lead to 2-1 with a single to score Rollins from third with one out.
Cubs 5, Braves 3: Kris Bryant and Miguel Montero had consecutive RBI doubles in the sixth as the Chicago Cubs extended Shelby Miller’s winless skid to 16 games with a victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Astros: OF George Springer was hitting off a tee Friday, Hinch said. That’s the good thing about this game. He went 1 for 4 with a single.
Even with a few poor starts, McCullers is 5-4 with a 3.19 ERA.
Philadelphia broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning scoring four runs on four hits off of Kendry Flores (1-2), who was making his first career start. McCullers hasn’t pitched since August. 18 against Arkansas.
