Fiery crash on Long Beach bridge leaves one dead, two others injured
Authorities have reopened a Long Beach bridge where a fiery head-on collision killed one man, and injured three others, including a police officer.
Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona says the bridge is closed in both directions Saturday after the 7 a.m. wreck.
Video and images posted online show two cars engulfed in flames in the middle of the bridge.
Fire officials determined a male driver died at the scene.
A wrong-way driver was suspected of hitting two vehicles, police told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
The unidentified man who was driving the wrong way was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, Arrona said.
A police officer suffered a laceration to his arm while trying unsuccessfully to pull the driver from the pickup truck.
The bridge will be closed in both directions for several hours during the on-scene investigation.
