The error was compounded by a “great many mistakes” – including a miscommunication with retailers that saw some players download a buggier pre-release build before Squeenix had finished their maintenance.
They could have delayed the port until it was in better shape, of course. As a result, some Mac gamers purchased FF14 only to find that their system didn’t meet the actual requirements.
Last minute efforts to optimize the game and improve performances resulted in the release of incorrect requirements for the Mac version, causing several gamers to discover their system didn’t meet the game’s requirements.
Final Fantasy XIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida released a lengthy statement on Square Enix’s forum about the issues, apologising to players. “To our customers who eagerly anticipate purchasing, or who have already ordered, their copy of the Mac version of FINAL FANTASY XIV, and to all of our distributors, we offer our deepest and most heartfelt apologies”.
“Up until the official release of the Mac version on June 23rd, we were working to improve the client’s performance”, Yoshida said.
Yoshida goes on to explain why the Mac version ran into problems, and why the Mac version performs poorly compared to the Windows PC version. Consequently, the system requirements which we should have released were not made available in time, which was a serious problem. Yoshida also assured that “Until I am personally satisfied that our users are adequately informed, we will be suspending the sale of the Mac version”.
Square Enix has released a trailer which shows the inside of Alexander which can be seen below.
IGN’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn review on PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 gave the game an 8.6, saying the experince was “grounded in tradition and learning from the lessons of the games that preceded it, it thrives on the strength of its excitingly varied and flexible class system and highly mobile combat”. The game is broken on Macs because the client also has to translate the PC code into Mac-friendly code in real time, significantly decreasing performance on all but the most powerful machines.
