Fiorentina upset Barcelona in global Champions Cup
Barca have played three matches in the worldwide Champions Cup – They opened up with a 2-1 success over Steven Gerrard’s LA Galaxy, but have since lost 3-1 to Manchester United and were also turned over by Chelsea on penalties after playing out a 2-2 draw.
Youngster Federico Bernardeschi was the Viola hero netting twice in the opening 15 minutes before Luis Suarez halved the deficit before the break.
The Catalans – without Lionel Messi and Neymar who have been given extra time off following their exertions at the Copa America this summer – dominated the rest of the match but could find no way through.
Blaugrana boss Luis Enrique has given another start to Thomas Vermaelen at centre-back while Sergi Roberto plays at right-back for the visitors.
Barcelona did not take too long to get on the scoresheet as Luis Suarez struck just five minutes after the Italian side had doubled their lead.
The European champions were caught napping again eight minutes later, when Joaquin teed up Bernardeschi.
And Barca were lucky not to fall further behind on the stroke of half-time when Bernardeschi went agonisingly close to claiming a hat-trick, the striker just about denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the goalkeeper charged 40 yards out of his goal to deflect a long-range effort narrowly wide.
A diving header from substitute Munir demanded a superb save from Tatarusanu to keep Fiorentina ahead, and the Romanian had to be alert again on the hour as Rafinha, Suarez and Pedro all peppered his goal.
The departure of Mohamed Salah has been pretty bad news for Fiorentina after his excellent loan spell last season, but great news for their young attacker Federico Bernardeschi.
