Fire burns train trestle in Oregon, forces evacuations
More than three dozen Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters are battling a Sherwood grass fire that engulfed a 129-year-old wooden train trestle Monday afternoon.
According to FOX 12 Oregon, crews said the train trestle was fully involved as a brush fire burned beneath it.
The trestle, near Southwest Tualatin-Sherwood Road and Langer Farms Parkway, began to collapse around 6 p.m., Cassandra Ulven said.
Power lines in the area are posing a risk to firefighters, officials said.
More than 7,000 residents living in a 2.5-mile radius of the fire are being asked to keep their windows and doors closed as the area is filled with heavy smoke.
Around 50 firefighters were at the scene Monday evening.
Firefighters are staged at North Star Chemical to protect it in the event that flames spread.
Portland & Western Railroad reported that tank cars near the trestle were clean and empty and secured a safe distance away.
Businesses located on the central edge of the trestle could have been evacuated.
