Fire Crews Tackle Large Blaze In Manchester
A large fire has broken out in a development site on Corporation Street behind The Printworks in Manchester city centre.
Wates Construction was renovating the grade II-listed six-storey building into offices as part of the £800m Noma redevelopment. The cause of the fire, the extent of the damage, and how long the project will be delayed are not yet known.
People were told to avoid the area after fire broke out at the CWS building near Victoria railway station.
The top of the historic Hanover Street building was seen well alight at 5.30pm.
Firefighters are still working to bring the blaze under control.
Eight engines attended the scene and commuters experienced significant delays to and from the city as local traffic, trams and the surrounding roads were all affected.
“They have been carrying out an assessment throughout the night”. I got a call to come back because the building had been on fire.
The Edwardian red brick Hanover building opened in 1907 and is the earliest remaining commercial warehouse built by the CWS’s own in-house architecture department.
