Fire Destroys Md. Home; Family Found Safe | NBC4 Washington
Those who choose to stay have been asked to not use generators, candles or gas stoves, Piringer says.
The 15-story building has 275 units and holds over 1,000 residents, according to Piringer. The affected building is 1111 University Blvd.
The Red Cross distributed snacks and water on scene and late Tuesday night and opened a shelter at Silver Spring’s Blair High School. This is the second electrical fire there in 72 hours.
The complex has had the power knocked out by two electrical fires within a 72-hour period. The same thing happened on Sunday.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says both the floors and a portion of the home’s roof collapsed in the fire.
There are more than 250 condos in the building.
Some residents self evacuated while others sheltered in place, however those residents could be forced out.
Adding to the concern is that the building has a number of elderly residents and residents with special needs who can’t take the stairs.
