Fire forces evacuation of Delaware’s Legislative Hall
Early reports erroneously indicated the fire had been caused by the building’s backup generator, Sass said.
Lawmakers are not in session.
Hall says a generator in the basement and a closet on the second floor caught fire; he was not sure which happened first. The city’s fire marshal’s office and building department will continue to work with state of Delaware Facilities Management and Capitol Police Department to determine when the building may again be used, she said.
Firefighters from several jurisdictions responded. The fire was placed under control around 3:40 p.m. A police officer was rushed to Kent General Hospital where he was treated and released. A Little Creek firefighter was also treated at the scene.
Firefighters were checking the attic to see if the fire had spread there, Hall said.
According to 6 ABC, the blaze was reported around 2:30 p.m.at the building located at 411 Legislative Avenue. It was built in the 1930s and two wings were added in 1994.
