Fire Prevention Week Soon
The Springfield Fire Department said in a news release that 400 smoke alarms will be installed free of charge in Springfield homes after a donation from the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield. The association notes that too often people are awakened by the smoke and heat of a fire, rather than the sounding of a fire alarm.

The Springfield Fire Department estimates that more than half of the city’s homes have no working smoke alarm.
Four hundred Springfield homes will now be a lot safer, thanks to a donation of smoke alarms from The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield, Meek’s – The Builder’s Choice, Metro Appliances & More and the HBA Charitable Foundation.
Another step to remember, keep the door to your room closed while sleeping, that will give you more time to block smoke and fire.
To learn about smoke alarms and “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep”.
Don’t overlook a few of your home’s simple, but important safety devices: smoke alarms.
In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half.
As the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, 2015, NFPA is promoting “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep”. In support of these efforts, the Chatham Township & Green Village Fire Departments will each be hosting an Open House. Alarms should be tested at least once a month and are equipped with a test button for that goal, and those with sealed-in batteries with a 10-year life span are suggested. This way, when one sounds, they all do.
Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
Go to your outside meeting place. Three of every five home fire deaths was the result of a fire in a home with no smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms.
The campaign focuses on saving lives and reducing injuries from home fires.
