Fire strikes 92-year-old church on Chicago’s South Side
The fire broke out Wednesday morning at the Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest church on the city’s south side.
An extra-alarm fire was burning early Wednesday at a landmark church in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
A few 150 firefighters battled the blaze at the Shrine of the Christ the King in the Woodlawn Community where a 10 year renovation was underway.
Firefighters were using several tower ladder trucks to pour water through the roof, which was heavily damaged. The church was created in 1923.
The building was more than a church.
There were no injuries and fire crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the rectory and a nearby women’s shelter. Officials said the kindle fire apply from the originial and second flooring straight through your roof, but with the fire have not achieve the residence. The fire is not considered suspicious and investigators are still trying to determine its cause, according to a tweet from the department.
“Whatever was going could have been going for hours undetected”, Langford said.
