Firefighter Shot Responding to Long Island Incident
A party invite from the Facebook page police believe belonged to standoff suspect Garland Tyree (phone and address information has been removed). Officers returned fire and killed Tyree.
The mayor was also criticized for his decision to call the NYPD after a political supporter, Bishop Orlando Findlayter, was arrested for outstanding warrants.
NY1 reporter Grace Rauh, who was waiting for him to exit, said around 11 a.m. that the workout was two hours in.
Garland Tyree posted “Today I die” shortly after opening fire on authorities.
After the firefighter was shot at the Staten Island apartment, Garland barricaded himself there.
Tyree was a suspected high-ranking member of the Bloods street gang who was wanted for violating his parole.
Several police and fire units can be seen at the scene.
The officials weren’t permitted to discuss the case ahead of a scheduled mayoral press conference and spoke on condition of anonymity.
When firefighters responded to the scene, Tyree opened fire, striking 53-year-old FDNY Lt. James Hayes.
“Lt. Hayes was speaking with the occupant of the apartment and speaking quite calmly, and then suddenly [Tyree] stopped”, Mr. Nigro said, leaving Mr. Hayes concerned that Tyree may have succumbed to smoke. It was not immediately clear where the woman is from in Delaware.
Tyree, wearing a bulletproof vest, then ran from the rear of 15 Destiny Court and started firing at cops, with more bullets striking police vehicles and a private house, said Widon, who oversees the emergency services unit. Garland is a “reputed member” of the Bloods gang, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.
Tyree had been on parole since last summer and in February surrendered on a warrant at his girlfriend’s home without incident, authorities said.
Updated with additional comment from Mr.de Blasio’s office to clarify the length of his time at the Park Slope YMCA.
A 38-year-old man who barricaded himself in his apartment after shooting at responders died Friday, police officials in New York said.
The firefighter was shot in the lower leg and was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, cops said.
No other shots were fired.
