Fireforge Games, studio behind Ghostbusters tie-in, files for bankruptcy
The game – which has a Metacritic rating of 43/100 and a user rating of 0.3/10 on the site – has performed poorly in the charts – not even making the top 40 all-format charts mere weeks after its July 12th release.
Fireforge – the studio behind the recently released Ghostbusters game – have filed for bankruptcy, according to Kotaku. Development on both projects ceased shortly after it began. Tan alleges that money distributed to FireForge for development of Zeus was used instead for the Tencent production Atlas. Also in litigation is a claim that Fireforge owed failed developer 38 Studios $3.7 million for licensing social media platform Helios, but then backing out and instead hiring ex-38 Studios employees to create their own product. One possible explanation: The game was developed in just eight months, according to one person who worked on it.
Matt Porter is a freelance writer based in London. One of those games, code-named Zeus, was due to be published by the hardware company Razer. Moreover, the studio is reportedly embroiled in an ongoing lawsuit with Min Productions. However, Fireforge has said that they started working on “Atlas” once Razer stopped paying them. The lawsuit is now on hold as Fireforge sorts out their bankruptcy proceedings.
So while the Ghostbusters game’s failure wasn’t directly responsible for Fireforge’s bankruptcy, it may have bought the studio a little more time had it been successful.
