First case of Zika virus confirmed in Northern Kentucky
The Brazilian city of Recife and surrounding Pernambuco state remain the epicenter of the Zika virus outbreak, which has now spread to many countries in the Americas.
The Zika epidemic has resulted in a huge increase in requests for abortion help among countries where the practice is now banned or restricted, a new study found.
Pinning down abortion rates in Latin America is notoriously hard, notes Aiken.
A recent study conducted by the Dutch organization “Women on the web” suggests that there is a rise in abortions in Latin America.
But it’s possible the women could have been infected with dengue fever or chikungunya instead, Perkins said.
However, the CDC warned last Friday that infection rates are rising in Puerto Rico.
This implies that there are many more cases of Zika infection that are not reported, said Yaneer Bar-Yam from the New England Complex Systems Institute in the US.
There is now no treatment for it and official advice to women is to not get pregnant in Zika-infected zones. “This could lead to dozens or hundreds of infants being born with microcephaly in the coming year”.
While Zika virus can spread through sexual transmission, there is no indication it can spread from person to person through casual contact.
Although most people infected by Zika suffer only mild symptoms, in pregnancy it can cause severe birth defects, including brain damage. In particular, a man infected with Zika virus and showing symptoms should not engage in unprotected sex for the next six months.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the first case noting that Dominican Republic is an area where the Aedes mosquitos are present. In Ecuador, that only applies to women who are mentally ill and who have been raped. While in women, there is a risk of giving birth to children with microcephaly, there are no cases in the literature where puppies are concerned. “We had 28,670 requests in total over those five years”, says Aiken.
No places in the continental United States now have local transmission of Zika, the CDC said. While there are now no vaccinations or medicine to treat Zika, your doctor can administer a urine or blood test to determine if you actually have it. Like Zika, it is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical climates.
“In Latin American countries that issued warnings to pregnant women about complications associated with Zika virus infection, requests for abortion through WoW increased significantly”, concluded the authors.
