First Christmas full moon in almost 40 years lit up sky
This time around, the moon will reach its peak size in the U.S.at 6:11 a.m. ET on Christmas morning, according to NBC News. The full moon, which is the last of the year, is called the Full Cold Moon because it occurs at the start of winter.
Like full moons in all other months, Native Americans have special names for December’s. However, you might be able to see it peeking through the clouds in southern parts of the United Kingdom as the night goes on. Named the Long Night Moon because it’s the first full moon to follow the winter solstice, it’s also known as the Cold Moon.
A full moon is set to appear in the Christmas sky tomorrow, for the first time in 38 years.
The good thing is the fact that the sky is expected to remain clear in much of North America including the United States and Canada and if you are interested to witness the moon in its full glory you will not be disappointed. “That full moon happened on December 25, 1977”.
“The closest this object will come to Santa and his eight tiny reindeer is about 28 times the distance between Earth and the moon”, Paul Chodas, manager of NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies at Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL), said in a NASA press release.
