First Colo. West Nile case reported in Mesa County
There has not been a human case of West Nile in the county since October 2012.
According to health officials, older adults have a higher chance of getting sick and are more likely to develop complications.

According to the Weber-Morgan Health Department, infected mosquitoes spread the virus when they bite humans, horses and birds.
Since the time West Nile Virus has been detected in two counties, public health officials in New York State have been reminding people to remain alert and take steps to avoid the dangers posed by mosquitoes.
“One for Triple E is found in hardwood acidic swamps, and the other is found in temporary containers, which we look for West Nile Virus“, says Graham.
Local health officials have been busy trying to exterminate the mosquitoes which are the carriers of the disease, and to raise awareness on the dangers of this virus.

The state’s most active year for West Nile virus was 2009 with 38 human cases. Keep window and door screens in good fix. When outside, you should use an insect repellant containing DEET and wear long-sleeve shirts and long trousers, especially during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most prevalent.
West Nile virus is influenced by many factors such as climate, the number and types of birds and mosquitoes in an area, and the level of immunity in birds to the virus. Make sure to read and follow label instructions.
