First government plane carrying refugees arrives in Canada
The refugees arrived just weeks after Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country would pull its fighter jets from a US-led coalition targeting Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.

Two families of privately sponsored Syrian refugees touched down at Pearson Airport Thursday night.
The Etobicoke-based registered charity is the primary agency providing furniture to Syrian refugees who will resettle in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) between now and February.
Kotyk added the response has been fantastic to see, especially in light of the anti-refugee rhetoric used by some politicians during the USA presidential campaign.

“Resettling refugees demonstrates our commitment to Canadians and to the world that Canada understands that we can and must do more”, Trudeau told the House of Commons on Wednesday. Those arriving on Thursday were met by sponsors and ordinary Canadians who had come to the airport to greet the much-anticipated newcomers.
– Syrian Canadians call on Canada to do more to support the refugees, including speeding up family reunification programs and opening the doors to more refugees, but the government says it will not act without an official request from the UN. “This shows the way we really are”.
Upon arrival, the refugees will be welcomed and undergo the final steps for admission by Canada Border Services Officers (BSO) who will confirm their identity using the documentation the refugees received following their immigration processing overseas.
