First Rio gold is within reach for US gymnastics
But they were allowed to enter only two teams in Rio.
Led by Simone Biles, the United States women posted the highest team qualifying score of 185.238 – almost ten points better than second place.
Douglas had been bidding to become the first woman since 1968 to win back-to-back all-around gold.
However, a two-per-country rule in the Olympics has deterred Raisman and her bid to win back-to-back golds in the all-around final, who was edged out by Raisman by a mere 0.351 in what the ecstatic gymnast called the “best vault (she) has ever done in (her) life”. Aly Raisman is the captain of the U.S. team, somehow still in her prime at 22. It’s not a loss by any means, however; according to NBC, all three gymnasts were at least one full point ahead of the fourth-place finisher.
Good luck world. It’s up to China, Russia, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands to knock the Americans off their throne.
But let’s not hand the US team the gold medal yet.
She is a three-time world champion in the all-around and a four-time USA all-around champion. “Because even though I had a lot of mistakes, (national women’s team coordinator Martha Karolyi) believed in me”.
Raisman hit what she said is the best Amanar of her life. “Simone is doing gymnastics because she wants to prove to the world how good she is”. Biles missed being able to participate in the 2012 London Olympics due to being too young by only three months.
Hernandez was not in contention for an all-around spot despite having finished second to Biles at trials. However, Gabby Douglas will not be defending her Olympic all-around individual title despite her third place finish.
Jordyn Wieber broke down in tears when she failed to qualify for the all-around final at the 2012 London Olympics. Douglas, who was the 2012 Olympic Champion, will compete in the uneven bars final along with Kocian.
She took a two year break, wrote a biography, starred in a reality TV show, and switched coaches. Everyone other gymnast: I’m very sorry, you’ve done much better than my one ill-advised cartwheel, but you can pack it up and go home now. “I’m still rejoicing. I’m pretty pleased with everything overall because there’s nothing to be ashamed about”.
However, all members of Team USA qualified for the event finals on Thursday. When Raisman drilled her dismount on beam, Douglas rose from her chair and gave her a hug.
The final subdivision will compete later on Sunday night.
The world will find out on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 3 p.m. ET when the US compete for a second consecutive Olympic team title. And the five will have to deliver again.
