First widespread frost, freeze of season possible this weekend
The first real fall chill has descended into the Triad and will hang around into the beginning of the week.
Sunday night brings more of the cold with lows falling into the upper 30s in the upstate while western North Carolina dips into the low 30s. Sunny and cool Saturday with highs near 53. There’s lots of sunshine across the area as we approach mid-day, but temperatures are struggling.
So if you’re headed out over the weekend, just know it’ll be cool.
Temperatures will quickly rebound to near normal values early next week with possibly a few spots around 70. There could even be a growing season-ending killing freeze in parts of the state. Due to this, a Freeze Warning is in effect for the region from Sunday 3 A.M. until 9 A.M. Those with agricultural interests need to be wary. A Freeze Warning is when temperatures are below 32 degrees.
Monday night will be another cold one, with warmer temperatures starting to return Tuesday and we’ll reach the upper 60s Wednesday, according to the weather service. This makes tonight extremely favorable for the formation of frost, as all of these conditions are expected to be fulfilled. Expect mid 20s to low 30s by sunrise Sunday.
Frost describes the formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans.
A few of the veggies should last after this frost.
Tonight: Skies remain clear into the overnight and with winds being calm, a widespread frost or freeze is likely. I’m talking about the arrival of freezing temperatures.
So how do you protect your plants? There is also a frost advisory for the rest of our area, including Shelby and Desoto counties, on Sunday.
Planters and pots can easily be moved inside or closer to the house, but if already in the ground, you’ll want to cover plants with a light blanket or cloth.
