Fitchburg State University says armed intruder in custody
Police say a man who fired gunshots near the Fitchburg State University campus has been taken into custody.
Police said Beauregard is known to be violent.
“Fitchburg State University was notified of the situation because of the close proximity to their campus, and they decided to issue a lockdown”, he said.
Nearly two hours later, a police sergeant convinced Beauregard over the phone to turn himself in. Multiple units responded to his location at the intersection of Normandy Road and Leyte Road.
The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and firing a weapon near a dwelling.
School officials placed the school on lockdown and police told people living in the area to stay in their home after reports of an armed man in the neighborhood.
University spokesman Matthew Bruun said classes don’t begin until September 3 and most students hadn’t arrived on campus when the incident occurred.
Beauregard is slated for arraignment in Fitchburg District Court on Friday.
