Five fantastic reactions to Oscar mix-up
We sincerely apologize to “Moonlight”, “La La Land”, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.
Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read that La La Land were the winners- even though the real victor was Moonlight.
“I’m a great admirer of ‘Moonlight, ‘ which is an exquisite, attractive film as well”, he said.
Within moments of Dunaway announcing La La Land as the Best Picture victor, it was clear something was awry.
The year before, he was even more irascible-saying, “I don’t know how much longer I can take this bullshit – so awful!”
An embarrassed Beatty then clarified that he read Emma Stone, La La Land on the envelope handed over to him.
He likened the turn of events to a “Shakespearean tragedy”.
Anyone who watched the Academy Awards live could tell something was wrong.
“We’re sorry for that [only] momentary uplift, but in the scheme of things.it’s fine”, Platt said Monday morning, as he prepared to fly back to NY and then on to London, where his next movie, “Mary Poppins Returns”, is being shot.
I think the main reason Moonlight won was because it had gay scenes. I wanted to see the card, to see the card.
“But backstage, it was just – there were two things”.
There really are no words to describe the final moments of the ceremony, but we’ll try our best. Beatty attempted to explain himself, but it makes little sense. “Nothing changes when I go back home”. I don’t know anything. I should probably find out.
“I thought it was so great how the “La La” team handled it, too”, King said. They take different routes to the show (in case traffic delays one) and stand on opposite sides of the stage. “It was nice to see something good come out of really an terrible moment”.
The crew from “La La Land” was on stage accepting the award. “I read it but I didn’t say La La Land”. And so I looked up at the stage and saw Jordan’s face.
“Cool! I guess we made history tonight”.
For such a mix-up to happen to a movie that is about a marginalized person-a poor, gay, black man-felt even more bittersweet than it might have had the situation been reversed. “This is not a joke, ‘Moonlight” has won best picture”. I hope more people see it now. “There’s been a mistake”, he said. A story that doesn’t usually get told in the mainstream has been told beautifully, and now has a Best Picture Oscar to show for it.
They included: Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali for their supporting roles in “Fences” and “Moonlight;” “Manchester by the Sea”, for best original screenplay and “Moonlight” for best adapted screenplay; Casey Affleck for best actor and Damien Chazelle for best director.
