Five million attend Chicago Cubs’ parade
“We can’t wait to see them come out and get insane”. The city asked crowds to gather downtown for the official parade, but some couldn’t resist lining much of the five-mile route that the buses took to get there from Wrigley Field. The parade also drew Cubs faithful from around the country. The 87-year-old comedian was alluding to the curse allegedly placed on the team during the 1945 World Series by the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern after he was told his pet goat wasn’t welcome at Wrigley.
“Had we not gone to that game, I probably would’ve grown up a White Sox fan”, said Williams.
During the 16 years that Caray called games at Wrigley, the Cubs made it to the post season but twice, never making it to the big game.
The game peaked at just under 50 million viewers between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m. ET, an extraordinary number given that it was so late for viewers on the East Coast. Of course I hope they can do it again next year, and several times again.
Fans began gathering at 2 a.m. outside Grant Park to get the best seat in the house to hear from Joe Maddon, Tom Ricketts, Anthony Rizzo, David Ross and the rest of the Cubs.
Davison, a high school senior, ditched class on Friday to celebrate. “But it is incredible”. They had a 3-1 lead over Chicago before losing two straight at home to the Cubs, who won their first championship since 1908.
He joked that he would inevitably offer the rejoinder: “How good is your health?”
How did Bartman feel about the Cubs’ win over the Cleveland Indians in the World Series? “The answer is zero years!”
“It showed the fight, the grit, the up-and-down, the history of the team, the fans and the city”, said Donna Drepeau, a 50-year-old artist.
The parade will wind its way downtown an hour later and end in Grant Park for a rally expected to start around noon. “It’s been more exciting than I could have imagined”.
In moments where they were not working to prepare for their games on Sundays over the last month, the Browns were paying close attention to the Indians on their journey to Game 7 of the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs.
