Five Reported Cases West Nile Virus In Connecticut So Far This Year
Four of those people are located in Bridgeport, and the fifth person is located in Shelton.
The five patients range in age from 30-80 years old. Four of the five patients were hospitalized as a result of the virus, but all five are now recovering, public health said. “In Bridgeport the numbers of West Nile virus infected mosquitoes have declined significantly during the past three weeks”, said Dr. Philip Armstrong, Medical Entomologist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
“Though we are at the tail end of the mosquito season, the health department reminds people to be vigilant and wear long sleeves and a repellant that contains DEET, particularly between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.”, Bradford told The Times-Independent.
“There is still a risk of new human infections in Bridgeport and several other Connecticut towns where infected mosquitoes have been repeatedly identified, especially along the coast from New Haven to Greenwich”, Armstrong said in a statement Thursday.
Mosquitoes are still biting with the warm early fall weather and the health department in Coldwater is reporting Branch County’s first case this year of West Nile virus, which was detected in 3 dead birds turned in by county residents to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Positive West Nile mosquito pools have been found in Huntington.
The vast majority of people who are infected with West Nile virus do not get sick.
