Five things: Lightning 3, Flyers 2 (OT)
Jason Garrison scored his second goal of the game in overtime, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Thursday night. Also noticeable was that Dave Hakstol was rolling all four lines late in the game.
Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop faced his second penalty shot 1:27 into overtime and made a pad save on Scott Laughton.
“Our focus now is on flex seats, single game and group sales more so than season ticket or pro-rated season ticket sales”, Bill Wickett, the team spokesman, said. For one member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, tonight is just a little closer to home.
There was an electric atmosphere pregame, with a highlight video of the Lightning’s playoff run on the JumboTron and standing ovations during player introductions.
Bishop stopped 23 shots in the win.
Philadelphia Flyers center Claude Giroux (28) loses control of the… Garrison’s right point shot through traffic found the net. Tampa Bay was buzzing in the second, holding the Flyers without a shot for the first 10 minutes while creating several odd-man rushes. Ironically, Tampa Bay only outclassed the orange and black in the second period, in which the Flyers scored both of their goals. The Flyers’ power play was already very good last season (23.4 percent, 3rd in NHL), and Evgeny Medvedev provides the unit with another weapon.
Yzerman, entering his sixth season as general manager of the Lightning, won three Stanley Cup championships as a player with the Detroit Red Wings, then added a fourth as an executive with the team. Forward R.J. Umberger assisted on both Flyers’ goals and also made an outstanding backchecking play to break up a Tampa scoring chance.
Jonathan Drouin picked up two assists.
Contact Joe Smith at joesmith@tampabay.com. Look at this crappy shot I took off the TV, with three guys on the boards and Giroux trying to cherry pick. After taking the lead, the Flyers were able to slow down the Tampa offense for a bit, but a Ryan Callahan tally with time winding down in the second sent the teams to their dressing rooms all tied up. 2, Philadelphia, Read 1 (Laughton, Umberger), 10:14.
“Umberger is pretty good in front of the net”, Schenn said. Tampa Bay’s line of Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov combined for 200 points and a plus-102 rating last season.2. Penalties-Schultz, Phi (hooking), 6:30; Stralman, TB (tripping), 11:26; Medvedev, Phi (illegal stick), 16:38; Filppula, TB (tripping), 19:11.
The third period was all Flyers.
As most of you know by now, just before the trade deadline Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Braydon Coburn was traded by the Philadelphia Flyers to the Lightning in exchange for former Lightning defenseman Radko Gudas.
While the Flyers saw success in the first period primarily due to their punishing forecheck, the third period was marked by Philadelphia dominating the neutral zone.
